Department of Inspection for Factories & Establishments (DIFE) has extended the deadline for up to six months for completing the remediation work under National Initiative factories. The Ministry of Labour and Employment and DIFE organized a meeting with the owners of 323 RMG factories from Dhaka, Narsingdi, Mymensingh, Tangail, Gazipur and Narayanganj districts. These factories are in round 3 as per the approved Escalation Protocol and their license renewal has been postponed. Labour Secretary Mr. K M Ali Azam said “the Government does not want to close down any factory but all the units will have to ensure workplace safety to run their business”. DIFE Inspector General Mr. Shib Nath Roy said “This is last chance and the factories would not get any time extension in future”. BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq said “in order to facilitate the remediation work, factories have been categorized in three groups. We will be calling a hearing meeting on 12, 15 & 19 October respectively, with the owner of the factories. Later, we will send recommendation to DIFE for further action as per the discussion”. It is mentioned that the view exchange meeting with the factory owner was held on 9-10 October, 2019 at the Conference room of DIFE at Labour Tower, Bijoy Nagar, Dhaka.
Mr. Joynul Abedin, Addl, Inspector General, DIFE, Mr. Farid Ahmed, JIG (safety), DIFE, Professor Mehedi Ahmed Ansari, Civil department of BUET, Professor, Kaiz Zaman, Head of IPE department of BUET, Mr. AKM Salehuddin, RCC Project Director and high officials from both DIFE & BGMEA were also present in the meeting.
