The Government of Bangladesh has placed strong emphasis on institutionalizing industrial safety after the collapse of Rana Plaza in April 2013. As part of this effort, more than 3500 export-oriented ready-made garment (RMG) factories were inspected between 2013 and 2015 for structural, electrical and fire safety. These inspection were conducted by Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety, the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety and the Government of Bangladesh’s National Initiative supported by the ILO.

Following the inspection, a Remediation Coordination Cell (RCC) has been set up by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) together with other industry regulators to manage the remediation process for RMG factories which were inspected under the National Initiative.
